This silent, raw footage shows replenishment at sea and flight deck operations, including an emergency barrier landing, aboard USS Philippine Sea (CV/CVA/CVS-47, AVT-11). This ship was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers of the United States Navy, launched on 5 September 1945. The film likely dates to the early era of the Korean War -- probably 1950 -- when the ship supported United Nations ground troops in coordination with USS Valley Forge. Its first engagement was during the Battle of Pusan Perimeter and then during the Inchon Landings and the Second Battle of Seoul and the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Philippine Sea saw three tours to Korea during the war, receiving nine battle stars for her service. After several deployments to the Far East, the vessel became an anti-submarine warfare platform, before being decommissioned in 1958.
